Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on How to Blur Video Background in After Effects:
- Select ‘Composition’ from the menu
- Click ‘Composition Settings’
- Make sure the frame rate of your composition is the same as the Video
- Click ‘OK’ to save the changes
- Make a copy of the video the background of which you want to blur by selecting the Video Layer
- Press ‘Ctrl+C’
- Press ‘Ctrl+V’
- Double-click the copy on top to open a new preview window
- Select ‘Roto Brush Tool’ from the toolbar
- Paint a selection over the objects you do not want to blur
- Hold ‘alt’ while painting to subtract from the selection
- To resize the brush, hold ‘ctrl+left click’ and drag the mouse up or down
- Press ‘Space’ for playback and After Effects will create a selection for the subsequent frames
- You can tweak the selection at any frame if the results are imperfect
- Click the ‘Freeze’ button to cache the frames and remove the background
- Switch back to the composition view
- Select the bottom copy of the video
- In the ‘Effects and Presets’ panel search ‘Gaussian Blur”
- Double click on the effect “Gaussian Blur” to apply it to the selected layer
- Adjust the amount of blur using the ‘Blurriness’ property
